Build a route

Tatev Monastery stands at the edge of a rocky promontory above the Vorotan River gorge, in Syunik province in southern Armenia. From Yerevan it is about 250 km and four hours of actual driving along the M2 highway. Most people cover the last stretch by air: the Wings of Tatev cable car runs from the village of Halidzor to the monastery, 5.7 km over the gorge in 11–12 minutes. You can see the monastery on a day trip from Yerevan, but it is easier with a night in Goris.

What Tatev is

The monastery was founded at the end of the 9th century. Its main church, Saints Paul and Peter (Surb Poghos-Petros), was built in 895–906. In the 14th and 15th centuries it was home to the University of Tatev, one of the last major medieval centres of learning in Armenia. Its best-known teacher, the theologian Grigor Tatevatsi, is buried at the monastery. Manuscripts copied at Tatev are now kept in the Matenadaran.

The complex is enclosed by a fortified wall with towers. On three sides the promontory drops several hundred metres into the gorge, so the fortifications were really an addition to what the terrain already provided.

What to see inside the walls:

  • Church of Saints Paul and Peter. The largest building, early 10th century. Fragments of frescoes survive inside.
  • The Gavazan. An eight-metre stone pillar from 904, topped with a khachkar. It stands on a hinged base and sways with tremors in the ground. People used to rock it by hand; these days you usually can't get right up to it.
  • Church of St. Grigor (1295) by the south wall of the main church.
  • Church of the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin) above the gate, late 11th century.
  • Refectory and oil press. Vaulted service rooms along the wall; the stone millstones are still in the oil press.
  • Monks' cells and teaching buildings around the perimeter, some of them restored.

An hour and a half to two hours is enough if you take your time and walk along the wall to the viewpoints. A little above the monastery on the slope there is a spot where you can see all of Tatev against the gorge. Few people make it up there; most only take photos from inside.

Wings of Tatev: the cable car

Wings of Tatev opened in 2010. At launch it entered the Guinness World Records as the longest non-stop double-track reversible (aerial tram) cable car, at 5,752 m. Two 25-person cabins travel towards each other between Halidzor and Tatev. At the deepest point of the span the bottom of the gorge is about 320 m below.

For the first few minutes the cabin runs over the plateau, then the ground falls away sharply and the Vorotan opens up beneath your feet. The monastery comes into view ahead towards the end of the ride. The best spots are by the front and rear windows, and they go first. If you're afraid of heights, stand in the middle of the cabin: it barely sways, and you don't have to look down.

Hours and prices

The figures below come from the operator's official website, tatever.am, in autumn 2026. Fares and timetables change, so check them again before you go.

SeasonDaysHoursLast departure
May–SeptemberTue–Sun and holidays10:00–19:0018:45
March–April, October–NovemberTue–Sun and holidays10:00–18:0017:45
December–February (closed 1 January)Tue–Sun and holidays10:00–18:0017:30 (first at 10:30)

Cabins run every 15 minutes, every 30 in winter.

The cable car does not run on Mondays in any season. This is the thing people forget most often, and driving four hours to a closed station is no fun. There are extra closures for wind and maintenance; the operator posts them on its website and social media.

Prices from March to November: 9,000 drams return and 6,500 one way. From December to February: 5,500 and 4,000 drams. Children under 140 cm pay 1,000 drams. Tickets are sold at the ticket offices in Halidzor and Tatev. Online sales on the website get switched off from time to time, and then you book by phone. In July and August, between 11:00 and 14:00, when the tour buses from Yerevan arrive, the queue in Halidzor can stretch to an hour or more.

A one-way ticket is for people who want to go up by air and come down on foot or by car. If you're driving, your car stays in Halidzor, so almost everyone buys a return.

How to get to Tatev from Yerevan

Almost the whole way is on the M2. Leave Yerevan heading south, pass Ararat and Yeraskh, cross over into Vayots Dzor and drop down to Areni, where Noravank is on the way. Then come Yeghegnadzor, Vayk and the climb to the Vorotan Pass (about 2,340 m). Beyond the pass is Syunik: a high plateau, the turn for Sisian, then the descent to Goris.

Halidzor lies off to the side of Goris, about 20 km away. The navigator takes you along the M2 towards Kapan and then onto a short road to the village. The Wings station is at the village entrance and hard to miss: it has a large free car park, a café and toilets.

The highway to Goris is mostly in good condition, but it is a mountain road: long climbs, lorries crawling uphill and few places to overtake. Near Yeraskh the M2 runs close to the border; don't stop on the shoulder or take photos there. Cameras are frequent, the limit outside built-up areas is usually 90 km/h and 60 km/h in villages. More in our piece on traffic rules in Armenia.

There are petrol stations in Yeghegnadzor, Vayk, Sisian and Goris, with long gaps between them. Goris has ATMs; at the monastery and in Halidzor you pay mostly in cash.

The switchback road to the monastery

You can also drive to Tatev without the cable car. From Halidzor the road switchbacks down to the Vorotan at the bottom of the gorge, passes Devil's Bridge (Satani Kamurj) and then switchbacks back up to Tatev village. That's about 12 km, half an hour each way.

The switchbacks are paved, but the asphalt is uneven in places, the bends are sharp and there are crash barriers only in some spots. Lorries use this road, including ones with Iranian plates, and on narrow bends you'll have to let them through. In daylight and dry weather an ordinary car handles it without trouble. In rain, fog, ice or darkness, leave the car in Halidzor and go up by cable car.

A good option: ride the Wings up, and the next day, if you're staying in Goris, drive down to Devil's Bridge separately. It's a natural stone arch over the Vorotan with warm mineral springs. From the bridge a path leads down to the 17th-century Mets Anapat hermitage. From the Halidzor car park the cable car operator runs a sightseeing shuttle to Devil's Bridge and the Arsnadzor viewpoint.

Goris or a day trip from Yerevan

One day. Leave Yerevan at 6:30–7:00, reach Halidzor by 11:00, cable car and monastery until 14:00, back by 19:00–20:00. That's eight to nine hours at the wheel and about three hours on site. Adding Noravank or Khor Virap on the way only works at a run. The day is doable, but the drive back over the pass in the afternoon, tired, is hard going. I wouldn't recommend it to a single driver, and certainly not in winter, when it gets dark early.

With a night in Goris. Goris is about 235 km from Yerevan. The town has dozens of guesthouses and a few hotels, and around it are the cave quarters of Old Goris and Khndzoresk with its suspension bridge. In the morning you're in Halidzor by 10:00, ahead of the buses, catch one of the first cabins and walk around the monastery in near silence. You head back to Yerevan after lunch without rushing.

With three days, it usually works out like this: day one, the drive south with Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank, night in Goris. Day two, Tatev, Devil's Bridge and Khndzoresk. Day three, the drive back, possibly via Sisian and the Karahunj stone field. You can put the stops together in the route planner, and Tatev and the places around it are on the map. For other short trips, see our selection of day trips from Yerevan, although Tatev only counts as one on paper.

When to go

  • May–June. Green slopes; there may still be snow on the verges at the pass, but the road itself is clear.
  • July–August. Down in the Ararat Valley it's hot, while Tatev, at about 1,500 m, is cooler. But this is peak season: queues for the cable car and lots of groups at the monastery.
  • September–October. The best months. Settled weather, autumn colours in the gorge, fewer tourists. Remember that from October the cable car closes an hour earlier.
  • Winter. The cable car runs, but less often, and it stops more often because of wind. The Vorotan Pass can be closed or slippery after snowfall, and the switchbacks to the monastery ice over. You need winter tyres and time in reserve. More in our pieces on Armenia in winter and on when to visit Armenia.

What car you need

From April to October an ordinary sedan gets to Halidzor and Tatev; you don't need four-wheel drive. Good brakes matter more: the descents from the pass and the switchbacks are long, so it's better to engine-brake in a low gear. In winter, take a car on winter tyres, and if you're crossing the pass after snowfall, a crossover with decent ground clearance is noticeably more relaxed. Which car class suits routes like this is covered in our piece on choosing a car class, and for documents, deposit and insurance, read our Armenia rental essentials.

Entry, rules and what to bring

Entry to the monastery is free; you only pay for the cable car. Tatev is a working monastery: it's best to cover shoulders and knees, and women will find a headscarf useful. Don't use flash inside the churches during a service.

What to bring:

  • A warm layer, even in summer. The promontory is almost always windy, and the cabin over the gorge isn't warm either.
  • Cash in drams for tickets, coffee and souvenirs at the monastery.
  • Comfortable shoes. The courtyard is paved with uneven stone, and a path leads to the viewpoint above the monastery.
  • An offline map. Coverage in the gorge and on the switchbacks comes and goes.

There's a café and stalls by the Tatev station, and Tatev village has a few guesthouses if you want to stay right by the monastery.
